The school governors are all volunteers, committing our time and energy to supporting Holly Spring Infants. We bring together knowledge of education, skills and experience from other careers or often simply a desire to get involved as parents.
Our role is mainly strategic, supporting the Head and his staff as they run the school, and taking care not to interfere with the day to day operations. There are plenty of pieces of legislation that set out how schools must be run, including how governing bodies should operate. We create “a strategic framework for the school, setting its aims and objectives, setting policies and targets for achieving the objectives, reviewing progress and reviewing the strategic framework in the light of progress.” To do this we meet several times each term, we have committees looking at Human Resources, Management and Finance, and of course Teaching and Learning. We act as a “critical friend” to the head teacher by providing advice and support, and by bringing challenge or by asking key questions to ensure the school is developing its pupils and itself.
We don’t need to provide advice for the routine aspects of school life – the Head and his staff are very experienced and well able to deal with these themselves. It is important for us to bring a strategic perspective to larger shifts or more major events such as changes in the senior staff, responding to major changes in legislation, or changes to the school such as the recent major building programme that is drawing to a close as I write this.
We do all this out of a desire to help the school.
